"What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?"
                                                                                                                           : :George Eliot

Due to poor designs in homes, a large number of people are trapped in their homes unable to use their showers, ascend steps, open doors, and in more drastic situations unable to flee their homes during an emergency without assistance.

Freedom by Design, an AIAS community service program, utilizes the talents of architecture students to radically impact the lives of people in their community through design and construction solutions. Vital modifications are made to enhance the homes of low-income elderly and disabled individuals by addressing their struggles with everyday tasks such as bathing, ascending stairs and/or opening doors.

Through numerous AIAS chapters around the country, Freedom by Design (FBD) teaches students how to resolve accessibility issues while simultaneously providing them with the real world experience of working with a client, mentorship from a     local architect, and an understanding of the practical impact of architecture and design.

The Freedom By Design Coordinator this year is Brandon Steck.  Feel free to contact him with any questions about the program.
