Graduate Applicants
Please review the following carefully:
- All applicants to the graduate program in architecture must submit a portfolio of creative work.
- Individuals applying to dual degree programs must be accepted in all relevant departments and meet all relevant departmental deadlines.
- Complete Department of Architecture applications must be received by January 15 for admission processing and for scholarship funding for the fall semester.
Online Applications
Applicants to the graduate program in architecture must apply to the Department of Architecture. Applicants are strongly encouraged to use the online application process GRADMIT:
If you cannot use the online process, please contact ap-rchadmit@buffalo.edu for paper copies of the application forms and procedures. You can also print or download an application and supplementary materials to mail in to the department.

Official Transcripts
Official transcripts bearing an original seal of the registrar from all postsecondary educational institutions that you have attended must be sent directly from those institutions to the department office. It often takes 2-4 weeks to complete this process, so be certain to allow sufficient time. Current University at Buffalo undergraduate students need not send UB transcripts, but should send transcripts for any other institutions they have attended.
Three Recommendations
Applicants should identify on the application form the names of persons who will be writing recommendations. You are strongly encouraged to find academic recommendations. Applicants should complete the upper portion of the recommendation form before requesting a recommendation. Recommendations should be returned directly to the applicant, sealed in the envelopes provided. The applicant should then include the three sealed envelopes with the other application material.
Application Fee
All applications must be accompanied by a nonrefundable check or money order made payable to the University at Buffalo.
- Fees for online applications using GRADMIT are $50.
- Fees for those candidates who must apply using a paper application are $70.
Statement
In 500 words or less, state your current position about the discipline of architecture. Please be specific about influential courses, instructors, books, personal or professional experiences, and goals.
Portfolio
The portfolio is a means of presenting your best work to be analyzed by a review committee. It must be representative of the person submitting it. It stands or falls on its own merit.
Graduate Record Exam
The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required.
