International Applicants

The Department of Architecture welcomes qualified applicants from abroad. International applicants are evaluated on the basis of academic qualifications, English-language proficiency, and evidence of financial support.

Students whose first language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency before being admitted to the program. The minimum scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test are:

In addition, applicants with TOEFL scores between 550-625 paper-based or 213-263 computer-based must take the SPEAK test upon arrival at UB during the International Student Orientation.

International applicants must also document their ability to meet all educational and personal expenses for the duration of the program. While departmental assistantships and fellowships are available, state and federal financial aid is not. International applicants should contact their government or the American Embassy or Consulate for financial aid information.

Please be aware of the following new policies for admission:

  • Students educated in Africa, China, or India must submit original bachelor’s degree documents upon arrival at UB.
  • All accepted international graduate students educated in Africa, China, or India will be given a provisional admission. Students must submit their original documents/degrees in the original (native) language upon arrival at UB in order to finalize their admission. Please be sure that you bring the proper documents with you when you arrive. Copies of documents from the student, department, or any other source cannot be accepted upon arrival; however, you should submit copies of these documents for initial review with your application materials.
  • A copy of the passport biographical page is required.
  • All international graduate student applicants must send a photocopy or a fax copy of the passport biographical page (the page that shows the holder’s full name, date of birth, nationality, etc.) with the application materials submitted to the architecture department.
