Architecture and Planning Library
The Architecture and Planning Library (APL) in Hayes Hall is one of nine units of the University at Buffalo Libraries. Collectively these units form a major academic research library ranked in the top sixty research libraries in North America. The Libraries contain more than 3.6 million volumes, augmented by extensive digital resources, including full-text electronic journals, books, databases, image databases, historical and research electronic collections, as well as media and world-renowned special and archival collections. Over 500 public computer workstations in cybraries throughout the Libraries provide access to a wealth of library resources and software and offer optimum work environments for academic users.
The Architecture and Planning collection contains more than 32,000 books and more than 100 journal titles, both hard copy and electronic, covering architecture, design, urban planning, zoning, landscape architecture, urban and environmental studies, and more. The library also includes a special collection of materials on Buffalo and Western New York planning and architecture, with emphasis on such famous contributors as Frank Lloyd Wright and Frederick Law Olmsted. A full run of UB architecture and planning student theses and final projects is also in the APL collection.
The Architecture and Planning Library is electronically networked to all other university libraries, so the entire UB collection can be searched by students in the library or by remote access from dorms or other off-site locations. For materials housed in libraries on the North Campus, such as the Lockwood Library, Law Library, or Science and Engineering Library, the Libraries provide a “Document Express/Intercampus delivery” system, so books and journal articles can be requested online and quickly delivered electronically via e-mail or in hard copy for pickup at the Architecture and Planning circulation desk.
