10.28.04 Team of graduate students win first place in international competition
A team of three graduate students in the Department of Architecture have won first place in the international competition Designing for the 21st Century. The submission by Azmi Zahed, Jason Atkins, and Natasha Luthra was selected in a two-phase competition from over 230 entries. The objectives of the competition are to encourage designers, educators, students, and policy-makers to address issues of universal design in diverse cultural and economic contexts. Professors Beth Tauke and Dennis Andrejko were the faculty advisors for the team. Congratulations!
10.28.04 Carter and LeCuyer guest edit The Architectural Review
Dean Brian Carter and Professor Annette LeCuyer were guest editors for the special October issue of The Architecture Review. The October edition focuses on current architecture in Canada.
10.28.04 Kleinman publishes article and chapter
Professor Kent Kleinman's article “William Muschenheim: A Brush, with Prefabrication” was published in do.co.mo.mo Journal #31 edited by Joan Ockman. Professor Kleinman's chapter entitled “Mies’s Curve” was published in CASE: Lafayette Park edited by Charles Waldheim.
10.07.04 Khan and Garófalo recognized
Professor Omar Khan and Professor Laura Garófalo’s collaborative work with choreographer Koosil-ja Hwang has been recognized at this year’s New York Dance and Performance Awards (a.k.a. the Bessies). Professors Khan and Garófalo designed the environments for both Mech[a] OUTPUT and deadmandancing EXCESS which were performed at NEST in Brooklyn, New York.
10.05.04 Mullick receives grant from U.S. Department of Education
Professor Abir Mullick has received a three-year $450,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education's National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. The grant will support research and design work for inclusive play environments for children with disabilities. The scope includes research on existing indoor play environments, development of guidelines for inclusive play environments, and the design and development of a prototype for a new play environment.
09.28.04 LeCuyer to teach Steel Master Class in November at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam
Professor Annette LeCuyer will teach in the 2004 Steel Master Class in November at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam. The Berlage, an international postgraduate laboratory for education, research, and development in the fields of architecture, urban planning, and landscape design, hosts this annual week-long intensive workshop to investigate new possibilities for design and fabrication using steel. Participating students will be selected from architecture schools in the Netherlands. Guest lecturers for the master class will be Toyo Ito and Richard Serra and, in addition to Professor LeCuyer, this year’s critics will include Nicholas Grimshaw from London, John Bettum from Oslo, the Dutch designer Joop Paul, and the French architect and engineer Marc Mimram.
08.10.04 Hadighi and Nazarian in Wallpaper*
Mehrdad Hadighi and Shadi Nazarian's Studio for Architecture was selected by Wallpaper* as one of twenty-five most intriguing, innovative and intrepid architects from all over the world. As a follow-up to the Wallpaper* selection and last year's Architectural Record "Design Vanguard" selection, the Buffalo News named the studio in their "Honor Roll." Studio’s recent project “Tall Acres” will be included in the forthcoming books New House Design (Loft Publications) and House+ (Thames and Hudson). In November, Hadighi will mount an exhibition of work in the Architecture Gallery at Rhode Island School of Design. The exhibition will be accompanied by a public lecture.
07.07.04 Big Bronze Book
After five years and many hiccups along the way, Professor Frank Fantauzzi, Anthony Dong, and David Zielinski installed the Public Casting of Cities' big bronze book at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
