Assistantships

Each semester, several teaching assistant (TA) and graduate assistant (GA) positions become available for qualified graduate students through an application process. These positions consist of work directly in various classroom or studio settings, and in areas of administrative or resource support.

Most of these appointments are for ten hours per week beginning one week before the start of classes and ending after Commencement.

TA and GA positions are competitively selected based on academic performance and experience in relevant areas of competence.

Applicants are required to submit a résumé and a brief letter requesting consideration. Letters will be reviewed together with academic qualifications and experience related to work requirements. Committees made up of the chair and faculty most directly involved in supervising TA work will be convened to make recommendations for selection.

Letters requesting consideration for the fall semester are due in the department office by April 1.

Assistantship Policies

  1. Assistantships are awarded on a semester basis, with a limit of four assistantships given to any particular student throughout his or her academic program.
  2. Assistantships and tuition scholarships are not linked and are awarded separately. Students are recommended to receive one, or the other, or both.
  3. No student on academic probation is eligible for an assistantship or tuition scholarship.
