Curriculum Policies
The Department’s Curriculum Committee has approved the following policies, which became effective Spring 1998:
Independent Study
Students must submit a typed "Independent Study Description Form" to the department office by the end of the first week of classes in either the fall or spring semester. This form must be signed by the student and the faculty member involved. If the proposed independent study is approved by the department chair, the student will be force-registered for the course. If the proposal is not approved, the student may be asked to clarify the description before registration can occur.
Studios
Independent study courses cannot substitute for studio courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs.
Graduate Studios
Graduate students must take at least one of two graduate studios (for those in the 3-1⁄2 year or 1-1⁄2 year track) or two of three graduate studios (for those in the 2 year track) on location at the School of Architecture and Planning during a regularly scheduled fall or spring semester.
Graduate students cannot repeat instructors for graduate (upper level) studios.
See the Department of Architecture policy statement on studio culture.
Participating ("Walking") at Commencement
In order to participate in the graduation ceremony, graduate students must submit the receipt for thesis document binding by May 1 of the academic year.
To facilitate Council Policy, the Department of Architecture requires the Thesis Committee Chair to verify via the Thesis Completion Verification Form that the thesis document is ready to be bound. This form must accompany the binder receipt or the bound thesis submitted to the Department, due by May 15.
