Course Waiver/Transfer

Course substitutions/waivers for a required course may be granted by the instructor of that course only if a student can prove proficiency with the content and material for the course in question. When instructors have agreed to waive a course, students pick up the form in the Department Office. The instructor completes the form and returns it to the Department Office.

When a required course is waived, a student takes in its place any elective offered in the Department or relevant courses from other departments.

Undergraduate transfers

To complete the BS Arch degree, all students need a miniumum of 128 completed credit hours. Regardless of additional course credits transferred from other institutions, BS Arch majors must complete a minumum of 4 ARC design studios (2 Junior year, 2 Senior year) and complete 9 credits of additional ARC-prefixed courses in both the junior year and senior year while in the departmetn. A minumum of 42 ARC-prefixed credit hours must be completed at UB to satisfy the Department of Architecture's BS Arch degree requirements.

Courses completed at other colleges and universities are not automatically accepted by the Department of Architecture as fulfilling departmental requirements. While select architecture courses taken elsewhere may be accepted, determination is made by an evaluation of the student's transcripts, course content, contact hours, and grades earned. A minimum course grade of B- (2.67 on a 4.0 scale) is required for articulation to courses offered by the School of Architecture and Planning. Student transcript evaluations are conducted by the School of Architecture and Planning's Office of Undergraduate Advisement. Placement in the undergraduate architecture program is made by the department following this evaluation, in tandem with portfolio review, when applicable. A minimum GPA of 2.5 in architecture and architecture-related courses and a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 is required for admission consideration.
