Professor Edward Steinfeld completed his doctoral and post-professional studies at the University of Michigan, and holds a professional degree in architecture from Carnegie Mellon University. Steinfeld’s research focus is universal design, human factors, and social theory and design. He is founding Director of the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDEA) and Principal Investigator for the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Universal Design at Buffalo based at the IDEA Center. His awards include a Distinguished Professor Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, a National Endowment for the Arts Design Research Award and two Progressive Architecture Applied Research awards.
He has published widely including over 80 articles in scholarly and professional journals, and has served as expert consultant on issues of accessibility for the World Bank, the New York City Housing Authority, the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and for private corporations and firms nation-wide. Steinfeld is a registered architect in New York State and member of the Rehabilitation Engineering Society of North America, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and the American Institute of Architects.
