Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDEA)

The Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDEA) focuses on research, education, and design projects on universal design and environmental access. Under the direction of Professor Edward Steinfeld, and with participation by a multidisciplinary team of faculty and staff, the IDEA Center has become a center of excellence in universal design and accessibility with a worldwide reputation. Since 1999, the center has been the home of the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Universal Design and the Built Environment funded by the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research. It is the only federally sponsored research and development center in this field. The IDEA Center receives additional funding from state and local governments and private sources; it runs an active educational program in the university, sponsors continuing education activities for professionals, conducts basic and applied research, offers technical services to the community, and develops innovative products.
