Fair
Housing Means Universal Design I (emphasis on bathrooms)
This 26 minute videotape is intended to improve awareness
of the Fair Housing Accessibility Guidelines contained in the 1988 Amendments
to the Civil Rights Act of 1968. It is directed to all building and
construction professionals (e.g. architects, interior designers, engineers,
developers, contractors) and virtually anyone concerned with housing
design. The program illustrates the value of the Guidelines, how small
adjustments in design go a long way toward enhancing independence and
how universal design helps make finished housing desirable to a wide
audience. Included with the video is a presentation guide that summarizes
the major points in the video and expands upon several technical details.
The guide also suggests questions in order to help presenters lead a
discussion about the issues of fair housing and universal design.

Window Searching
for Universal Design
This 15 minute VHS videotape was produced to demonstrate
how the theme of universal design can be used as a general vehicle for
teaching a studio design course in architecture or related disciplines.
It documents a one semester studio curriculum that was initiated in
the Department of Architecture, SUNY, Buffalo in Fall of 1993 with a
class of over 40 undergraduate architecture students. The goals, activities
and impact of the program are presented. Several design projects, including
buildings and products are illustrated and discussed by the participating
faculty. This videotape is a valuable introduction to universal design
for both faculty and design students. The curriculum was supported in
part by a grant from Adaptive Environment's Universal Design Education
Project. An article describing this curriculum development program was
published in Strategies for Teaching Universal Design, Polly Welch (ed.),
Adaptive Environments, Boston.
