Automated
Doors: Volume 1- State of the Art Report
This report documents a literature review, product review, facility
management survey and code review of automated doors. Several types
of doors are addressed, including "full power" automated doors
such as those commonly used at supermarkets and transportation terminals
as well as "low energy" and "power assist" doors
that are typically used in less demanding situations. The focus of the
review is on accessibility for people with disabilities.

Automated
Doors: Volume 2- Accessibility Requirements and Recommendations
This report describes the methods used to develop
accessibility requirements for automated doors and then presents these
requirements in an annotated form designed to help the reader understand
the priority of each requirement. An appendix of technical terms is
included.

Pedestrian
Safety for the Elderly: A State of the Art Review
This is a detailed review of the human factors and driving literature
about pedestrian safety for older people at street crossings and streets
in general. It examines the human performance limitations associated
with aging that have a bearing on pedestrian safety, evidence that demonstrates
increased risk of accidents for the older population and specific research
that focused on pedestrian safety for older people.

Architecture
An extensive study of the reaching and grasping abilities
of people with hand and arm disabilities was completed using a sample
of 100 individuals. General data was obtained on the anthropometric,
biomechanic and psychomotor abilities of the participants. A series
of reports documents the findings of the research and provides recommendations
for design standards. A design guide can be used to access the performance
data in the context of design activities.

Storage
Research on storage is reported using full scale
modeling techniques. A sample of people with a variety of disabilities
were asked to store and retrieve items in three different contexts.
First, general reaching abilities to high and low locations with and
without obstacles was examined using several different storage devices
(shelves, drawers, hooks and hanging rods). Second, minimum clearances
for walk-in or roll-in storage closets were investigated. Third, storage
in bathrooms was examined using simulated rooms. Recommendations are
provided for comfortable reach ranges for people with disabilities.

Methods
for Teaching Barrier Free Design
This report documents three years of experimentation
by the author teaching barrier free or accessible design through several
courses at SUNY/Buffalo. The topic was introduced into design studio
courses, an environment-behavior course, a course in building regulations
and community service offerings. Descriptions of the curriculum offerings,
methods of instruction and examples of projects completed by students
are provided with a critical analysis of the success of each intervention.
Recommendations are made for integrating the teaching of accessibility
into architecture curriculums.

This report describes the state of the art in plumbing
fixtures and accessories designed to facilitate access and use by people
with disabilities. General issues of accessibility and code requirements
are discussed, including proposed changes to the CABO/ANSI A117.1 Standard
and the barriers to developing innovative products with universal design
features. Case studies of currently available products that enhance
the usability of plumbing fixtures and accessories is provided as well
as selected corporate strategies for development of universal design
in plumbing products. An action agenda for streamlining the regulatory
process and bringing innovative products to market is also included.

Anthropometrics
of Disability Anthropometry
is the science of measuring body characteristics. Such measurements
are the basis for most accessibility codes and are used to design products
and systems with which people interact. The report is a summary of the
proceedings of an international workshop on anthropometry for people
with disabilities. The workshop was help in Buffalo in June of 2001.
The report describes advances in the state of the art in anthropometry,
the challenges of measuring people with disabilities and recommendations
made by the experts at the workshop.
