Hands-on Architecture

An extensive study of the reaching and grasping abilities of people with hand and arm disabilities was completed using a sample of 100 individuals. General data was obtained on the anthropometric, biomechanic and psychomotor abilities of the participants. A series of reports documents the findings of the research and provides recommendations for design standards. A design guide can be used to access the performance data in the context of design activities.

Accessible Storage

Research on storage is reported using full scale modeling techniques. A sample of people with a variety of disabilities were asked to store and retrieve items in three different contexts. First, general reaching abilities to high and low locations with and without obstacles was examined using several different storage devices (shelves, drawers, hooks and hanging rods). Second, minimum clearances for walk-in or roll-in storage closets were investigated. Third, storage in bathrooms was examined using simulated rooms. Recommendations are provided for comfortable reach ranges for people with disabilities.
