Frequently Asked Questions

Requirement 6

Q. What are the requirements for reinforcement of bathroom walls in covered multifamily dwelling units?

A. Reinforcements are required in bathroom walls to allow for later installation of grab bars around the toilet, tub, shower stall and shower seat, where such facilities are provided.

Q. Are reinforcements required in the walls of a bathroom containing only a toilet and sink, which is typically referred to as a "powder room?"

A. In most cases, no. The exception would be if a powder room is the only toilet facility located on an accessible level of a multistory dwelling unit. In that situation, the powder room would have to comply with the requirement for reinforced walls for grab bars.

Q. If a bathroom contains a toilet that is not placed adjacent to a side wall, are grab bars still needed?

A. Yes. In this situation, the bathroom would comply if provision was made for installation of floor mounted, fold away or similar alternative grab bars.
