Financial Aid
The University at Buffalo’s tuition is competitive and a particular bargain for New York State residents. In addition to tuition you will be assessed mandatory graduate school fees as well as a School of Architecture and Planning technology fee. For information, see tuition and fees.
Financial Packages
For qualified students the Department of Urban and Regional Planning can create an attractive financial aid package. This may include graduate or teaching assistantships, research assistantships, full or partial tuition scholarships, or—for exceptionally qualified candidates—combinations of these. Affiliated research centers, notably the Center for Urban Studies and the Institute for Local Governance and Regional Growth, also offer financial assistance to selected students. The university also has employment opportunities in libraries, computer laboratories, and administrative offices. The department works with applicants to explore possibilities for financial aid.
Minority Opportunities
Minority students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents may qualify for a full tuition scholarship plus a generous stipend through the Schomburg Fellowship, a fellowship unique to the State University of New York system. Through the Center for Urban Studies, minority students may also find support as HUD (Housing and Urban Development) Fellows, an award providing full tuition, stipend, and book expenses.
For more information on these and other assistantships or scholarships, see Opportunities.
Assistantships
If you wish to be considered for an assistantship or other financial aid, please include with your application a letter to the admissions committee requesting consideration. In the letter, outline your financial need and your qualifications for assistantships, including teaching and research experience if applicable.
Financial Aid
Applicants for need-based financial aid should apply using forms provided by the Student Response Center at the University at Buffalo. New York residents wishing to be considered for an assistantship must submit either an application for financial aid or a TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) application to the Student Response Center.
