General Degree Information
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning offers several degree programs. Undergraduates may pursue the bachelor of arts in environmental design or the minor in environmental design. Graduates may pursue the master’s in urban planning or dual master of architecture/master of urban planning (M.Arch./M.U.P.) or dual JD/master of planning (JD/M.U.P.).
At their option, graduate students may also choose to pursue one of five specializations within the M.U.P. degree program. The M.U.P. program is fully accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning.
Undergraduates
Students in the environmental design program have an avid interest in the urban and built environment. The interdisciplinary, preprofessional B.A. degree provides students with the knowledge, skills, and preparation for employment in the public, private, or nonprofit sectors, or graduate study in a variety of fields including urban and regional planning, environmental studies, land and real estate development, architecture, public administration, law, public policy, and business. The minor in environmental design enables students with interests in these areas to gain mastery while pursuing another degree program.
The department has majors, minors, and intended majors (students working on entry requirements) in environmental design for a total of 125 students affiliated with the program.
Graduates
The two-year M.U.P. degree provides students with the knowledge, skills, and experience to become a professional planner. The degree is fully accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning, with current accreditation effective to January 1, 2014.
Together with the Department of Architecture, the department offers the dual-degree, M.Arch./M.U.P. The dual degree offers students with interests in architecture and planning the opportunity to pursue graduate professional education in both fields.
Together with the Law School, the department also offers the dual degree, JD/M.U.P. The dual degree offers students with interests in the legal and planning facets of governmental policy and practice the opportunity to pursue graduate professional education in both fields.
The department accepts 40-50 students annually into its graduate programs. The department typically has 100 students enrolled in its graduate programs.
