Scholarships
The department circulates information on scholarships and other financial opportunities to all students. Among the regular offerings are:
Environment and Society Institute Graduate Fellowship
The Environment and Society Institute (ESI) will award ESI Graduate Student Fellowships to outstanding applicants for UB graduate programs. These "top-off" fellowships of $5,000 are designed to augment departmental or other support and to attract students to UB who might otherwise join graduate programs at other universities. Thus, students who have done no previous graduate work at UB are likely to receive preference.
Fellowship recipients are expected to enroll in at least one interdisciplinary environmental seminar per year and to participate in appropriate activities of the institute. Fellowships may be renewed for a second year, contingent upon availability of funding and the demonstration of satisfactory progress in interdisciplinary environmental research.
Anne P. Brody Scholarship
Awarded annually, this scholarship is open to UB freshmen, sophomores or juniors pursuing any course of study. The winners demonstrate outstanding achievement or exceptional promise and have submitted essays that best discuss the importance of service to the university and community. Application deadlines are typically at the end of March each year. For forms and more information, see http://mgt.buffalo.edu/undergrad/brody_application.doc
Arthur A. Schomburg Graduate Fellowship Program
Sponsored by the State University of New York, this highly competitive fellowship is available to African American, Hispanic American, and Native American graduate students with outstanding undergraduate academic records upon their acceptance as first-time, full-time graduate students. This fellowship program currently supports approximately 140 students at the University at Buffalo.
Graduate departments nominate individual students for this award, which consists of both a stipend and a tuition scholarship. Students should contact the department for information concerning the nomination process.
AAUW Educational Foundation Fellowships and Grants: Selected Professions Fellowships
Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded to women who intend to pursue a full-time course of study at accredited institutions during the fellowship year in one of the designated degree programs where women’s participation traditionally has been low. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Candidates in all programs except the master’s in engineering and medicine are eligible to apply for support for the final year of study only and are expected to receive their degrees at the end of the fellowship year. Women pursuing master’s in engineering programs are eligible to apply for either the first or final year of study. Women in medical programs may apply for either their third or final year of study. Doctoral candidates in engineering must be entering the final stages of writing their dissertations. Special consideration is given to applicants who show professional promise in innovative or neglected areas of research or practice in areas of public interest.
Summer Scholarships, Washington Center for Internships
The Washington Center for Internships partners with the SUNY Foundation to offer two $3,400 scholarships to UB students to participate in summer internships in Congress or with the federal government in Washington, D.C. Students with an interest in public affairs are encouraged to meet with Washington Center representatives when they visit the school, typically in mid-March each year.
Urban Land Institute Kenneth M. Good Graduate Student Fellowships
This fellowship program awards eight $5,000 scholarships annually to deserving full-time graduate students who are studying real estate, real estate development, or related subjects in a North American university. Universities may nominate only one student annually. Judges weigh nominees’ academic history and current standing, related work experience, goals and career plans, and financial need. Application deadlines typically fall in mid-May of each year, with more information and applications found at scholarship@uli.org.
Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans
The Open Society Institute – New York annually sponsors 30 Soros Fellowships to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished new Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. Each fellowship provides annual maintenance of $20,000 and a tuition grant of one-half of the tuition cost of a U.S. graduate program attended by the fellow. Applicants must be either resident aliens, naturalized citizens, or the child of two parents who are both naturalized citizens, and must be either in the final year of undergraduate study or pursuing a graduate degree in any field. Deadlines are typically in early November of each year.
